You’re welcome to join me.
The exercise is fun, simple, and brings clarity to a chapter in The Story.
The effort supports sustained focus, energy, and growth — personal, professional, and organizational growth.
Over the years I’ve made it a practice to identify a theme for the year, Chapters in the Story. Here are the guiding keywords for the past five years:
2014: The Year of Breakthrough
2015: The Year of Adventure
2016: The Year of Disruption
2017: The Year of Clarity
2018: The Year of Opportunity
Connecting the dots
If you have read my new book, Leaders Create Space – Transforming Disruption into Clarity for Life and Work you may have connected the dots. Over the course of the past three years — 2016 through 2018 — I discovered and identified “The Three Creations of Leaders.”
- Leaders Create Space to Think
Focus: the intentional interrupting of doing to think
- Leaders Create Clarity to Act
Focus: the deliberate alignment of purpose and structure to achieve success
- Leaders Create Opportunity to Get Better
Focus: the cultivation of environment and culture to inspire people
As a result of developing each year’s theme, my personal growth and leadership development are shaped. Furthermore, the Next Level Journey coaching program continues to expand and mature. This experience is amazing.
What’s next you ask?
With confidence, humility, and anticipation I’m pleased to announce this year’s theme.
2019: The Year of Responsibility
What does that mean?
In this context, responsibility is freedom to answer for one’s role in the Story.
It is part of the human condition to avoid, blame, play the victim, deny, minimize, or rationalize one’s contribution to a situation that misses the mark. People who take responsibility stand out like a big boulder in the white waters of Montana’s Blackfoot River.
Next time we’ll discover other personal growth and leadership lessons to watch for in The Year of Responsibility.
What’s your keyword for 2019?
I started listening for the 2019 keyword on November 16, 2018. It’s a process of discovery.
If The Year of Responsibility resonates with you, I hope you’ll join me on The Journey.
If you’re interested in a process to help you select your word check-out “What’s your Word?” a quiz available on MyIntent.org. MyIntent also has a different 3-step process. You may want to check-out, too.
When I took the quiz this morning my word was “courage.” That’s interesting; the New Year may require courage to take responsibility.
I’m thankful for you and how the Story has connected us.
Here’s to your Next Level,
Steve
