The Wisdom of Sand

September 13, 2019 by Steve Laswell

When I turned 50, I boldly proclaimed, “50 is the NEW 40!”

I believed it.

Last week, I used Medicare for the first time at Oschner Chiropractic Centre. It was on my birthday; yes, that one.

Last week, I heard myself repeating, “When I turned 50, I said ’50 is the new 40.’ Let me tell you, 65 is NOT the new 55.” (Smiles and laughter.)

I believed it.

What we believe matters

A gift with a message

My wife, Rita, nailed the historic celebration with her gift: a sand clock.

In my “King for A Day” birthday card, she wrote in part:

“Happy 65th! Anticipating the next adventure with you. The hourglass is to remind us how quickly time slips away…”

Neither the digital display nor the “hands” on a clock deliver the powerful message of the hourglass. We cannot control the trickle of sand from one bulb to another.

Time is fleeting.

One life, many stories

Besides the celebration of my birthday, there are other prompts in the Story to remind me of life’s brevity.

My 90-year-old mother is leaving us little by little. Dementia.

My older brother, Greg, passed away one year ago. He would have been 68.

This month, I meet with a Neurologist to understand why my right-hand tremors like a dog wagging its tail when I get excited.

Maggie, our first grandchild, is in college.

And can you believe it, Q4 – 2019 is just a few moments away!

Life is fleeting, and everybody has a Story.

What’s the question?

One of the Psalmists humbly petitioned God, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Wisdom, seeing life from a higher perspective, it’s required to live life.

Today, I hope you feel the fleeting nature of life. If so, let me ask:

Are you writing the Story you want to tell?

Create Space to Think

Since, what I believe matters, I’m changing my words and my belief about turning 65. Now, I report, “65 is the new 60!”

With the help of my new sand clock, I purpose to pursue wisdom and write the Story I want remembered when my sand is gone. Each day, I intend to be bold, courageous, and intentional in my life.

What’s going on in your Story?

What must change for you to write the Story you want to tell?

How can I help you write that Story?

Let’s talk.
