Who needs help?
Frankly, it’s been a “season” of life for me. A lot of “Life happens” stuff has happened. I’ll spare you the details. I know “everybody has a Story” and the point is not to compare notes, the purpose is to acknowledge the reality of life. The Journey includes disruption, resistance, opposition, distractions, setbacks, and breakthroughs. The uncertainty of the world affects our lives, work, families, and business.
As people, we need help to achieve our potential and make a difference.
Yes, I know about the Comfort Zone. It’s easy to settle down in that place called “Stuckville.” Remain a resident too long and fear stands at the city limits like a pit bull daring us to leave.
Pain develops when we stay too long, and can become the new normal. To address the pain, we use busyness and other means of “self-medication” to avoid reality.
And yet, there is the promise of something better. Like you, I want to be my best, to do my best, and to get better every day. I want to be a contributor to the people in my Story.
We alI need help overcoming self-doubt, selfishness, internal resistance, timidity, weakness, and fear. We must reject fear to embrace boldness, courage, determination, love, and self-control. To do our best work, we need help seeing our potential and the possibilities, which means we must change.
What got you here, won’t get you there.
The work of a leader
In her Harvard Business Review Whiteboard Session, historian Nancy Koehn talks about “The Ingredients of Great Leadership.” She shares David Foster Wallace’s meaningful definition of a leader.
Leaders are “Individuals who help us overcome our selfishness, weakness, and fears, and get us to do harder, better, more important work than we would do on our own.”
Leaders are people who use their influence to help us overcome something to do something significant with our lives.
Next Level Leadership Development is a journey a leader takes with other leaders.
To begin, you must know where you’re stuck and be willing to change unproductive, self-limiting behavior. The desired outcome is to make a difference, to improve performance by expanding your influence.
Leaders help people overcome something to do something that matters.
It’s a smaller world
In my Story, Bernadette Jiwa helps me overcome limitations to do my work. She is a leader. She recently wrote in her blog, The Story of Telling …
“Many of us spend the majority of our time thinking about what people want to hear.
And while it’s important to understand your audience, it’s equally important to remember what you have to say, as only you can say it.
Of course, you want to make a bigger impact and reach more people.
But the impact you make will depend on your ideas resonating with the right people—not just reaching the most people. The people who believe in you and your message will enable you to do your best work. You will draw those people to you by clearly making your assertion and stating your intention.
What’s the truth you want your audience to know?”
What I want you to know
This past week, after a lot of work, I released the redesigned Next Level Executive Coaching website. I had leaders at StructureM help me. It’s better.
It communicates my assertion and states my intention regarding my work.
I believe you can Master Effective Leadership.
I purpose to help you reach your potential and enjoy leading people.
Leaders help people overcome something to do something that matters.
