Do you have what it takes to change?

October 3, 2013 by Steve Laswell

“Well, I was more aware of my behavior,” Terry reported.

“Asking questions is hard. I’m used to telling. Asking questions takes a lot of thought,” he continued.

“Remember to start with who, what, when, where, or (if you’re careful with your tone of voice) why, and how?” I encouraged.

“I had a lot of meetings last week; did pretty good, but blew it in a meeting with…

Where did the unhappy people go?

July 9, 2013 by Steve Laswell

“I finally figured out how to improve employee morale,” David McInnis said to Roy Williams.

“Productivity skyrockets and everyone loves coming to work. It’s program that never fails. Works every time.”

I stood there looking at David.

He stood there looking at me.

Finally, I raised my shoulders and turned my palms upward.

Looking steadily into my eyes, David said, “Fire all the unhappy people.”

Who argues with the GPS Lady?

June 26, 2013 by Steve Laswell

Simon has been identified as a “high potential” in the company. However, if he is to succeed he needs help. During a recent project update Simon said to Tim, his boss, “I don’t know what the **** I’m doing.”

Here in the United States, volunteers placed miniature American flags to honor the men and women who died serving in the Armed Forces yesterday. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” this day called a nation to remember the soldiers who died in the Civil War. Later, the day was extended to honor all who died in military service.

When your performance sucks

May 6, 2013 by Steve Laswell

Natalie Gilbert was invited to perform the Star-Spangled Banner. Memorized and rehearsed she had performed it so many times she could belt it out blindfolded.

A booming voice delivers the introduction:

And now, to honor America and salute the men and women serving our country, with our National Anthem. Please welcome – as voted by you the fans, our winner of the Toyota, “Get the Feeling of a…

What if you care too much?

April 15, 2013 by Steve Laswell

Last week, I shared my story of planning and hosting a family reunion. How something so “once-in-a-life-time” became stressful. There’s more to discover.

As a recovering perfectionist, my desire for everything to be “perfect” casually slipped into trying to control.
